The Ipposidra | SKATOFIX
The term Ipposidra, which takes its name from the Greek terms used for horse (ippos) and water (hydration), refers özay fecht to a particular railroad, built in 1858 and used for the carriage of boats, using horses. It sounds bizarre, but it is what happened in the province of Varese (although then it was the province of Milan) in 1860. This railway line that ran near the river Ticino is one of the many curiosities in which you can encounter along the paths of the Ticino and the country roads around the airport of Malpensa. I am interested in this railroad some time ago, reading a very interesting book by Riccardo Brianzoni entitled özay fecht "The railroad of boats Tornavento in Sesto Calende" (ISBN: 88-8340-240-5 Publisher özay fecht Macchione). Click here for a draft. Pdf. There was talk of this railroad boats now disappeared, there were only a few tracks lost in the woods of Sesto Calende and Somma Lombardo until the heath of Malpensa.
It was not very easy, especially because of that work, today there are only a few remains: some path in some cutting, some ruined bridge, in terms of lost in the granite moors. Do not expect to find old tracks or stations abandoned, there is almost nothing left of it.
Until 1800 much of the transportation between Lake Maggiore and the city of Milan occurred using the Ticino river and the canals connected to it, through the path Sesto Calende - Tornavento - Milan, and vice versa. The time spent in navigation varied with changes in the level and speed of the water of the river. With water scarcity boats was lightened; during flooding traffic was suspended. Da Sesto Calende to Tornavento, with the current of the river in favor, is employed ninety minutes, touching on the rapids of the twenty mph! From Tornavento in Milan eight or nine hours. For the way back, from Milan to Tornavento, before the construction of the towpath along the Navigli (years 1824-1844), is employed fifteen days using twenty-five horses for a convoy of five or six boats. Subsequently the construction dell'alzaia only three days and twelve horses.
The problematic part of the path that remained between Sixth and Tornavento Kalends. To walk about twenty-five kilometers, employing özay fecht one to two weeks. It was necessary to remove the boats and move them one at a time trainandole. It brought some horses on the opposite bank of the river, to win the current and optimizes traction. Travel times are so far away from the pace of our days! The construction dell'alzaia sul Naviglio, had definitely decreased journey times between Milan and Tornavento. The existence of a real road on which to walk the horses dedicated to towing, facilitated the towing of boats back from Milan. To further decrease the travel özay fecht time, the stretch Tornavento - Sesto Calende designed the 'Ipposidra.
So here is a scholar of transport as Carlo Cattaneo, had the idea to extract water boats Tornavento, put them on wagons pulled by horses 8-wheel and bring in Sesto, where they were put back into the water along a via ferrata crossing the moor. Thus was born the Ipposidra özay fecht (from the Greek terms indicating horse and water), a work unique in Europe.
In 1844 he formed with his friend Francesco Frattini and Besozzi özay fecht the company "Railroad to shoot horses Tornavento in Sesto Calende pel terrestrial trailer boats avoiding the difficult rapids of Ticino." The Austrian government was reluctant to grant the concession, at least until it became part of the company's Geneva banker James Mirabaud, sponsor of the Duchy of Parma, who took over one-sixth of the company (private deed May 27, 1847). Between one thing and another had been reached in 1848 and Cattaneo found himself engaged in the Five Days of Milan. After the uprising in Milan, March 20, 1848 was established the Provisional Government özay fecht of Lombardy headed özay fecht by Casati. On April 29, 1848, the Provisional Government recognized the utility of a road for towing boats and authorized its construction. Which Cattaneo had lobbied? The rest had invested 5.000 Lire Austrian society!
On August 9, 1848, when the Austrians returned to Milan, özay fecht Cattaneo deed with the notary Guenzati özay fecht gave his wife Anna Pyne Woodcock, English, his actions, in order to avoid confiscation. On 18 March 1850 he arrived the long-awaited grant from the Royal Government and the transformation of the company into a public company pushed the Cattaneo lenders to look at friends and bankers.
